About Me

This is where the fun begins....

The first thing was to get rid of the deck lid hideous hinges and repair the rusted out panel between the hinges. We did a quick DA and primer to see how much of the sheet metal was in sorry shape, we’ll do everything in sections as the car has to go outside just about everyday so I can work in the shoe box garage on other things .

Well as you can see there wasn’t much left of anything in the trunk, the amount of good flooring that was left helped support and keep the door lines in tacked with the frame kept level. We had to build a bending brake for the new steel sheet that must be replaced. The rear pan and other parts will have to be maid by just an idea of what it should look like since we have nothing to copy from or make templets. And the first new shop tool was an Hobart Air force 400, there was no other way to go but with high tech equipment .this tool is worth it’s weight in gold when it comes to saving time and labor.

Here is a shot of what’s shot on the other side in the trunk. Since there is no aftermarket sheet metal available for this car that I know of or a price that wouldn’t put this project on the back burner and me in the poor house we had do make every part by hand the best we could . That gray stuff is a high end seam sealer I have used over the years for body panel work, it helps keep the elements out to help prevent blistering on paint and a home for rust to move in.

The home made hide-a-hinge that I made worked and the price was right in the ball park, I used some square stock I had left over from a job. The part that took the longest was figuring out the pitch, angle and pivot. Other than that they work fine. Now we are into about our 4th full week "time wise" on this project and we haven even scratched the surface "we DA'ed it " but now I can see this isn’t going to be a walk in the park by no means.

Just when I though the deck lid job was done I found more things to replace in that area. The gutter like rail that goes up the sides and the lower part of the lid it’s self was in need of some sheet metal in stead of the bondo and flashing someone at one time had patched it up with. I just got to do one piece at a time, gee, every time I take a brake and look what lies ahead  I have myself wondering if we will make the date of the bet for the car to be on the road.
